With NFL free agency kicking off at midnight on Thursday, the Chicago Bears need to make a huge splash. They have no first or second-round draft picks to spend money on and a salary cap-less year on the horizon, priming them to be major players in free agency for the first time I can remember. I'll take a look at a few positions and players the Bears should be targeting in free agency.

Each horseplayer has to have an edge, which is a secret only he uses. If other people use it, then he gets underlays and not only does he become a loser, but so do the people who steal his picks. In other words, if Joe picks the 3 horse and bets 5 to win, and Jenny decides to do the same, and she tells Fran and Bill, who each tell two friends, and before long Joe's 5 dollars is represented by 300 dollars, since at least one of those friends is an idiot who bets big money, and there are those at the track who simply bet what they see money bet on, and they can easily turn a 28-1 into a 12-1. Joe's available profit turns from 56 dollars (58.00 payoff) to 24.00 (26.00 payoff). He has to hit this twice as often. He plays it because if he wins one time in 30 he comes out ahead. Now one time in 30 puts him behind, because his own friends cut their own throats just to cut his. That's what it amounts to.

Little League World Series: No Longer ‘The Bronx Bombers’ its now Chula Vista Bombers!

By Adam Hill

51 Home runs in 10 games!  I think that is all I need to say.  Anybody who understand baseball, knows that 51 home runs is not normal for anybody to hit in only 10 games.  I saw the stat comparison with the San Diego Padres, and it has taken them 60 games to hit that many home runs, if that puts it into comparison for those who are unfamiliar with baseball.

Who's the best NBA center ever?  Good question.  Most people argue for Kareem, Wilt, Russell, Shaq, and Moses.  Who do I think?  I think Kareem Abdul-Jabaar is the greatest center in the history of basketball.  Kareem won 6 titles, is the all time leading scorer in the history of the league, had probably the most effective shot ever (the skyhook), was a good solid defender, and extremely iconic.

Form went upside down in the Derby. Four of the runners with the most sprint in their bloodlines ran first through fourth, coming mostly from behind.

As I stated before, there can be no clear cut favorite. Oddsmakers are making the filly the favorite. Not only does this defy logic, it defies Anatomy, since the females of all species, including equines develop and mature earlier than males. Therefore, while the fillies hit their peaks young, as with humans, the males are still builing up.

The objective for the last three seasons has been to take a 21-win, 61-loss Blazer team and rebuild them into the Playoff-bound, title-contending team we, the fans, want them to be.

Objective accomplished.

It doesn't help that everyone else was wrong, too. I can say that I didn't have Mine That Bird picked last. I had him picked second from last. If it wasn't for GodAwful stable having entrants, I surely would have picked him last.

This weekend's column will focus on the future pool for the Derby, which is more exciting this year with the addition of exacta wagering. With 552 possible combinations (barring a scratch), the average payoff figures to be about $800 on a $2 bet.

1:11 PM CST: Well, after staying up til 4 am watching videos from the Lonely Island (you know you've done it too), I managed to sleep through the majority of the first halves of the opening games. There are now just seven minutes remaining in my featured game and the 15 seed Cal State Northridge is down by just one to Memphis. They've even led the Tigers by as many as six points. I have Memphis and John Calipari's greasy hair going to the Final Four, but I want this to happen.

The Maryland Terrapins and coach Gary Williams came close to punching their ticket to the NCAA Tournament last night but fell short to Wake Forest by two points at home.  That means the Terps will have to impress the committee in the upcoming ACC tournament by going deep through the talented pool.

As the NFL crowns a new champion in Super Bowl XLIII Sunday evening, Big Daddy looks forward to watching the game, enjoying the Boss’ halftime show, laughing at the best commercials, and devouring master chef Eric Labouchere’s wonderful spread at the infamous Kingpin bar. Saints fans always take advantage of Super Bowl parties to whip their perfectly sculpted bodies into Mardi Gras shape. Big Daddy’s 21st

What an impressive win for Ole Miss over Texas Tech. The Rebels finished the season with a flurry, winning their last 6 games. I think they pretty much served notice to the rest of the SEC that they are going to be formidable next season.

The United Football League officially announced itself yesterday to the press and the rest of the football world. The league announced their $20 million training complex in Arizona, unveiled both a new league logo and the official website, the final 8 cities to fill the 6 slots for teams and the announcement that a television deal is in the works. Other information was announced and league commissioner Michael Huyghue had several interviews and new quotes about the league. Take a visit to ufl-football.com and you will see a video of Huyghue welcoming you to the league as well as a blog keeping you up to date on it. The website also other information about the league and has given the fans the chance to name each of the league's franchises. The day was big, giving the league a little bit of momentum heading into 2009 and much bigger announcements to come as early as next month. With that said one must look ahead, past this announcement, and wonder. What's next?

A matter that only holds relevance in the rainy dirth of Seattle is the fact that Rick Neuheisel, easily the most reviled coach to don the purple and gold makes his return to Husky Stadium Saturday night.  I intend to voice my displeasure towards him, although I am less offended than most at his lying and interviewing other schools.  I dislike his principles of coaching.

Before you say anything, I know, I know, I know, but this side gig (as enriching as it is) doesn’t exactly pay the bills (or the bar tab, whatever the case may be) at all, so I’ve been putting most of my energy into my alter ego. Dave the outdoor enthusiast and salesman, which hasn’t exactly left me with enough time to really share any of my sports related nuggets of wisdom with y’all.  BY the way, at this time I’d like to just put it out there that I am submitting applications for an unpaid internship position as my research assistant (quick, find me Ryan Howard’s OPS!) and stenographer (translation: follow me to the bar with a tape recorder to find out what I really think about Derek Jeter).  Send in a résumé and a cover letter, and I’ll let you know.

I took my daughter to the pool today and noticed I had left my copy of "Lonesome Dove" in the city. Damn! I pulled out the old reliable Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract revised, published in 2001. Great book to have lying around to learn about each decade of baseball since 1870. He also rates the top 100 players at each position, gives history, opinion and analysis. The analysis is not something I'm crazy about. Gimmee the plain stats. No sabermetrics, win shares and other goofy mathematical formulas. I don't need to think about it that hard.

If you're a Pistons fan, it's hard not to have a soft spot for Rasheed Wallace. The way The Palace fans bellow out his name -- "Sheeeeeeed!"-- when he's on the low block. The way he talks: "We ain't afraid of them cats, man." The way he gets booed on the road, only to silence the crowd with the stroke of a dagger 3.

The hits just keep on coming. This whole season, it seemed that the Bulls kept missing out on golden opportunities and unfortunately, that is also carrying on into the off-season.

Over the weekend, former Suns coach Mike D’Antoni signed a four-year contract with the New York Knicks. Last week, reports released assumed that D’Antoni, whose Suns team averaged 58 victories over four seasons according to the Chicago Tribune, was extremely interested in coaching the Bulls. General Manager John Paxson was also interested in the partnership even though D’Antoni has an offensive mindset and Paxson is more interested in defense.

To celebrate the Sony Ericsson Miami Open and the grand opening of Gansevort South Hotel , Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal played an exhibition match on the surface of a pool.  An underwater crew built two invisible platforms at each end of the pool using acrylic sheets and tubes. Have you ever wanted to own your own sports franchise? Personally, I would really buy into an opportunity to be apart of a sports franchise. I came across a legit idea that I decided to actually promote. If I didn't buy into what these guys were doing 100%, then I wouldn't be pitching their idea for them.

First, I never wanted to add myself to the clutter of talking heads spouting off with their opinion. However, if someone is willing to pay me this minimal fee to do this, then I guess being at a young age without much money I am going to sellout. Not to mention when your life has become something even you yourself have to laugh at, and you don’t have much going on during a week night, blogging doesn’t seem too bad.

The always entertaining and God praising Magic Johnson professed that the excitement and allure of the NBA All-Star Weekend "is back! It is Back!" Wow, Magic, that is amazingly profound! The truth of the matter is that the All-Star Weekend is NOT back ... it just happens to be the ONLY All-Star event in professional sports that is any good and can captivate a decent pool of the sports viewing public. I mean seriously, what is it competing against?

Preach on, Elijah Cummings. Keep nailing Roger Clemens to the cross of lies that he will bear for the rest of his waking days.
Chuck Knoblauch is lying. Andy Pettitte is lying. Brian McNamee is lying. That's what Clemens wants you to believe, and he wants you to take his word that he is the only one telling the truth in a probe that threatens to throw him in jail for perjury and witness tampering.

I know what some of you are thinking: that the Yankees have become the Red Sox and the Red Sox the Yankees.  They didn't have to wait another 83 years to win a World Series; they came in 1st place in the AL East; and, worst of all, they don't look bad next year either.  Do they have dynasty written all over them, while the Yankees gear up for another embarrassing finish?   Not so fast, fans...<>

Today was another reason why the NFL playoffs, and the NFL overall is great theatre.

I can't think of one person besides a few residents in Ocean Beach, or a spattering of communities north of Tijuana that had the Chargers winning today's game at Indianapolis.  "DVR-proof" I believe is the term that braodcasters use, and the NFL fits this to a Tee - you just cannot predict this stuff.  You have to see it live to belive it.  And thus,we are hooked.

Amazing. The San Francisco 49ers won their second game in a row today. They beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a pretty good team. A playoff team. The only playoff team we've beaten all year. In fact, the only team with a winning record we've beaten all year. We were very large underdogs, I'm sure (I just spent no less than 4 minutes of research time trying to find out what the odds were for the game, but due in part to the game being over and in part to my ineffectiveness at understanding odds lines, I cannot properly provide you - i.e. nobody - with that information). But somehow, the Niners pulled it out and spoiled Jeff Garcia's glorious return to the toilet that is Candlestick Park, where he spent the prime of his career.
